Devils 5, Sharks 2: Jacob Josefson recorded a short-handed goal and an assist in his first game since Dec. 27 as New Jersey completed a 2-1-0 California trip.
Jordin Tootoo and Steve Bernier scored 35 seconds apart late in the first period for the Devils, who netted five goals in both wins on the trek. Mike Cammalleri and Travis Zajac also tallied, Adam Henrique and Scott Gomez notched two assists apiece and Cory Schneider made 34 saves.
Joe Pavelski and Matt Nieto scored for the Sharks, who fell to 1-1-1 on their season-high seven-game homestand. Alex Stalock turned aside 29 shots as San Jose lost for the fifth time in its last six at SAP Center (1-4-1).
Pavelski opened the scoring four minutes into the contest, beating Schneider on the short side from the right faceoff circle moments after a turnover. Tootoo forged a tie with 4 1/2 minutes left in the first period by knocking his third attempt from the bottom of the slot past Stalock and Bernier put the Devils ahead shortly thereafter by burying his own rebound from the same spot.
San Jose pulled even at the four-minute mark of the second session, with Nieto converting a cross-slot pass from the left circle by Tyler Kennedy. Cammalleri restored New Jersey's lead during a power play with 5:15 remaining in the period, when his shot from the top of the slot deflected off Sharks defenseman Matt Irwin and in, and Zajac backhanded a rebound on the doorstep past Stalock at 11:10 of the third to create breathing room.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Josefson sealed the win with 5:28 to play, firing the puck inside the left post from the slot after receiving a feed from Henrique. ... Schneider made his league-leading 41st start of the season after leaving Friday's loss at Anaheim with a head injury. ... Sharks C Joe Thornton notched his 879th career assist, tying him with Nicklas Lidstrom for 21st place on the all-time list. It also was Thornton's 1,230th point, moving him past Norm Ullman for sole possession of 38th in NHL history.
