No. 8 Michigan State 61, No. 18 Minnesota 50: Gary Harris hit four 3-pointers as the host Spartans used long-range shooting to upend the Golden Gophers.
Harris, Keith Appling and Denzel Valentine each hit a 3-pointer during a 15-2 second-half run for Michigan State (19-4, 8-2 Big Ten). Trailing 27-26 with 16:31 remaining, the Spartans held Minnesota (17-6, 5-5) to 1-of-7 shooting over the next seven minutes, building a 41-29 advantage.
The Spartans finished 9-for-18 from 3-point range. Harris scored 15 points and Appling added 14 (three 3-pointers) for Michigan State, which committed just five turnovers.
Andre Hollins led Minnesota with 11 points and Trevor Mbakwe added 14 rebounds. The Gophers have lost five of their past seven, with three of the losses coming against ranked teams.
Austin Hollins’ free throw with 2:48 remaining pulled Minnesota within 49-45, but the Spartans scored the next seven points to seal the victory.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Both teams struggled from the free-throw line. Minnesota shot 9-for-15 while Michigan State finished 12-for-20. … The Spartans have won eight of their past nine since falling at Minnesota in the Big Ten opener on Dec. 31. … Michigan State led by seven with seven minutes left in the first half, but the Gophers rallied with an 11-2 run and led 20-18 at halftime.
