Tony Mitchell scored a career-high 24 points as Alabama beat Tennessee 65-60 in overtime Saturday in Knoxville to collect its fifth consecutive win.
The Crimson Tide (15-7, 7-1 SEC West) didn’t make another field goal after Andrew Steele’s jumper with 4:30 to go in regulation, but did hit all 10 of their free throws in overtime.
The Vols (15-8, 5-3 SEC East) had won three straight overall and five in a row in the SEC, but matched a season low by shooting 34.9 percent from the field and committing four turnovers in overtime.
JaMychal Green contributed 14 points and Trevor Releford 13 as Alabama won for the ninth time in the past 10 games.
Vols freshman Tobias Harris had 19 points, including a jumper in the lane with 44 seconds left that forced OT. Cameron Tatum added 16 points. The rest of UT’s starting lineup, minus the injured Scotty Hopson for a second straight game, totaled two points on 1-of-11 shooting.
Tennessee was dominated in the first half, allowing 66.7 percent shooting and trailing by as many as 12 late in the frame. The Vols scrapped back to seize a 45-44 lead with 9:33 to go in regulation, but made just one field goal in the next 7:23.
