Grant Riller had 29 points as Charleston held off Providence on its way to a 63-55 win on Friday afternoon during the consolation round of the Wooden Legacy in Anaheim, Calif.
Riller, a senior guard, shot 9 of 15 from the field and 9 of 10 at the foul line, making 7 of 8 free throws in the second half. He added five rebounds, five assists and two steals for the Cougars (4-3) as they rebounded from a 65-56 loss to Wake Forest in Thursday's opening round.
Charleston hit a trio of threes in a 111-second span early in the second half to go ahead after trailing 29-27 at the break. The first two were by junior guard Brevin Galloway, and Riller's triple put the Cougars 40-37 with 14:42 left.
A 12-1 run gave Charleston a 49-38 edge with 8:33 to go as Providence (4-4) went nearly five minutes without scoring and went 8 1/2 minutes without a field goal, missing eight straight shots during that drought.
The Friars trailed 51-41 with 6:23 left before sophomore guard David Duke scored four of his team-high 22 points in 17 seconds, including an alley-oop dunk. But Riller responded for the Cougars by drawing a foul on a drive and hitting two free throws.
Duke's steal and basket pulled Providence within 59-53 with 2:02 left, and the Friars forced a backcourt violation with 1:45 left but then turned it over seven seconds later.
Providence, which led by as many as 13 in the first half, shot 25 percent in the second half and 33.9 percent for the game. The Friars blew a 17-point second-half lead to Long Beach State in Thursday's first round.
Charleston will play Sunday in the fifth-place game against UCF. Providence will take on Pepperdine on Sunday for seventh place.
