San Jose State used a 10-4 run at the end of the first half to take the lead for good in an 88-76 road victory over Washington State on Sunday.
The Spartans (2-3) entered the day on a three-game losing streak, but didn't have a problem generating points against the Cougars thanks to their stellar performance on the glass. They outrebounded Washington State 50-39 and shot 55 percent (22 of 40) from two-point range.
Forward Ryan Welage scored 20 points to lead five Spartans in double figures, while also pulling down 11 rebounds. Forward Brandon Clarke had his third double-double of the season for SJSU, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Jaycee Hillsman went 3-for-3 from the field and 8-for-10 at the free throw line to contribute 14 points off the bench.
Washington State (3-3) dropped its second in a row.
After trailing 44-38 at intermission, the Cougars cut the margin to 48-45 early in the second half, but then went scoreless for the next 3:28 as San Jose State extended its lead to nine. The Cougars never again made it a one-possession game.
Forward Josh Hawkinson finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds to earn his 45th career double-double at Washington State. Guard Malachi Flynn added 18 points and made three of four three-point attempts. The Cougars stayed in the game thanks to eight three-pointers, but made just 15 of their 44 shots from inside the arc.
