Justin Leon regularly refuses to leave the Florida practice court until his business is completely done.
The senior forward has a specific number of shots he wants to make and he isn't going anywhere until his goal is met.
"He's in the gym as much as anyone we have," Gators coach Mike White said. "He's a machine, and he also plays like it."
Leon certainly performed like a mechanical shooting device on Saturday, when he scored 18 points and made a career-high four 3-pointers to help No. 17 Florida post a 71-62 victory over Texas A&M in an SEC game at Gainesville, Fla.
Senior reserve guard Canyon Barry added 12 points to help the Gators (20-5, 10-2 in the SEC) record their sixth straight victory.
Junior center John Egbunu contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and junior reserve point guard Chris Chiozza added 11 points and five assists for Florida.
Freshman forward Robert Williams matched his season high of 18 points and also had 12 rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals for the Aggies (13-11, 5-7).
Senior center Tyler Davis added 12 points and eight rebounds and sophomore guard Admon Gilder had 12 points and matched his career high of five steals for Texas A&M.
The Aggies were hurt by 20 turnovers -- Davis committed six -- and were only 4 of 18 from 3-point range.
"I thought we played really good defense, but you can't turn it over 20 times and miss layups around the basket and win it," Texas A&M coach Billy Kennedy said.
Both teams shot 39.3 percent from the field. The Gators were a shaky 8-of-27 from 3-point range, but Leon was immune from the problems.
Leon was 4-of-8 shooting from long range while falling one point shy of his career high.
"I think we may have been a little too focused on our shots falling," Leon said. "And that (almost) cost us."
The winning streak was in jeopardy when Texas A&M held a 40-36 lead after Davis converted a three-point play with 12:23 remaining.
The Gators responded with a 12-2 burst.
Barry hit a floater to push Florida ahead, Leon added a 3-pointer and sophomore guard KeVaughn Allen ended the stretch with a steal and breakaway layup to give the Gators a 48-42 edge with 9:19 left.
Barry drained a 3-pointer to give Florida a 53-45 lead with 7:59 to play. The advantage reached 10 when Chiozza drained a 3-pointer with 3:35 remaining.
Leon buried a 3-pointer to push the margin to 65-52 with 3:02 left and the Aggies were unable to mount a final charge.
"I thought their depth hurt us and Tyler Davis is a much better player than what he played today," Kennedy said. "Florida -- they were good and experienced."
The Gators controlled the first 13 1/2 minutes of the game, but led only 29-27 at the break.
The Aggies trailed 16-13 after Davis' basket with 10:52 left in the half before the Gators rattled off the next eight points.
Allen connected on a 3-pointer and followed with a conventional three-point play, and Egbunu slammed home a dunk to make it an 11-point margin.
Texas A&M answered with seven straight points and 14 of the next 17 to forge a tie. Gilder scored nine points during the surge, including the final seven, ending with a tying 3-pointer.
Barry hit two free throws with 26 seconds left to give the Gators the two-point halftime advantage.
White was miffed over the stretch that saw the Gators give up the double-digit lead. And he didn't disagree when a reporter suggested his squad was "brain dead" during the stretch.
"Brain dead is kind," White said. "We'll take it. You learn from every game, positively and negatively. When you learn some of the things about yourself that you didn't do so well and you can still come out with a win against a really good team, that's a positive in and of itself. We were very fortunate."
NOTES: The Gators won their previous five games by an average of 28 points. ... Texas A&M freshman F Robert Williams recorded his seventh double-double of the season and has reached double digits on the boards in six of the last eight games. ... Florida senior G Canyon Barry hit four free throws to set a school record with 39 consecutive makes. Taurean Green (37 in 2005-06) held the old mark. ... Aggies sophomore G Admon Gilder played all 40 minutes for the seventh consecutive game.
