Portland State 76, USC 68: Tiegbe Bamba led five players in double figures with 19 points as the visiting Vikings took advantage of 23 Trojans turnovers for the victory in the season opener for both teams.

Bamba was 8-of-11 from the field, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range, and added six rebounds and four steals for Portland State, which committed only four turnovers. Braxton Tucker had 16 points, while Bryce White and Tim Douglas added 14 apiece.

Freshman guard Jordan McLaughlin had an impressive debut for the Trojans with 19 points and six assists, but committed seven turnovers. The Trojans outshot the Vikings 53.2-39.1 percent and won the rebound battle 43-25.

USC pulled within 60-58 on two free throws by Julian Jacobs with 5:06 remaining but 2:57 later, Portland State had turned four baskets and a Tucker bucket into a 70-58 advantage. Katin Reinhardt answered with a basket and a 3-pointer to cut the Vikings’ lead to 70-63 with 1:15 left, but the Vikings hit 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch, including 5-of-6 by Bryce White.

McLaughlin’s 3-pointer with 7:21 remaining in the first half gave the Trojans their final lead at 23-22, but the Vikings answered with an 11-0 run over the next four minutes. McLaughlin had 13 points and USC was hurt by eight turnovers that Portland State turned into nine points in the first half.
