North Carolina 83, Florida State 62: P.J. Hairston scored a game-high 21 points, including five 3-pointers, as the Tar Heels pulled away in the second half to beat the Seminoles in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament at Greensboro, N.C.
Reggie Bullock chipped in with 17 points and nine rebounds for North Carolina (23-9), which will play Maryland in the semifinals on Saturday. James Michael McAdoo registered 12 points, Dexter Strickland had 10 and Marcus Paige added nine points and a career-high 10 assists for the Tar Heels.
Michael Snaer recorded 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Florida State (18-15), which had its three-game winning streak snapped. The Seminoles turned the ball over 18 times, leading to 27 points for the Tar Heels.
Florida State tied the game at 23 before the Tar Heels scored 12 of the final 16 points of the first half – including two 3-pointers by Hairston – to take a 35-27 lead at intermission. Hairston had 12 points and McAdoo 10 in the opening 20 minutes.
Hairston ignited a 13-0 run early in the second half with another 3-pointer as the Tar Heels pushed their lead to 52-35 with 14:15 to go. The Seminoles could not get closer than 13 the rest of the way as North Carolina finished 10-of-21 from 3-point range.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Hairston left the game with a little over four minutes left, suffering from a cut on his left hand. … Florida State – the defending champion – had won four straight contests in the event. … North Carolina won its 89th ACC tournament game – second only to Duke’s 91 – and leads the series against Florida State 45-12.
