Joe Harris scored a game-high 18 points, including eight in the final 10 minutes, as Virginia survived a late Drake rally for a 60-52 victory in the consolation of the Paradise Jam at St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands on Monday afternoon.
Virginia (4-1) held Drake without a field goal for more than 13 minutes to turn a three-point lead midway through the first half into a 32-15 advantage early in the second half. The Bulldogs crept back within four points, but Virginia would not allow them to get closer.
Mike Scott added 14 points and nine rebounds for Virginia.
Drake’s leading scorer Ben Simons, who missed all five shots from the field and went scoreless in the first half, led the Bulldogs (3-2) with 14 points.
Rayvonte Rice (12 points) pulled Drake within 16-13 with 9:04 left in the first half, but the Bulldogs managed only two free throws before halftime as Virginia built a 26-15 lead. Drake missed nine shots and turned the ball seven times during the 13:03 it went without a field goal.
Harris was 3-for-7 from the field and 4-for-4 at the free-throw line to lead all scorers with 10 points in the first half.
