Elias Harris scored 17 of his season-high 27 points in the first half and Gonzaga built an early 18-point lead to record a 71-60 victory over Arizona in Saturday’s annual Battle in Seattle.
Kevin Pangos added 13 points and Sam Dower tallied 10 as the Bulldogs (7-2) scored the game’s first 14 points and held off a late rally by the Wildcats (7-4).
Kyle Fogg scored 14 points and Nick Johnson added 13 to pace Arizona, which is just 3-4 after winning its first four games of the season.
Harris was 12-of-16 from the field and was on his game from the outset. His jumper gave Gonzaga a 14-0 lead with 14:43 left in the first half, and he had 14 points in the first nine minutes as the Bulldogs took a 22-4 lead.
Arizona made a late charge after a dunk by Harris gave Gonzaga a 55-37 lead midway through the second half. Fogg and Jesse Perry hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Perry scored on a layup to pull Arizona within 10 points with 7:52 remaining.
The Wildcats later scored seven consecutive points to cut the Bulldog lead to 60-54 with 2:44 left but couldn’t reduce the margin any further.
Arizona missed its first seven shots of the game and shot just 31.3 percent over the first 20 minutes en route to a 39-21 halftime deficit.
