Six days ago, C.J. Williams tied his season-high in points in a loss at Stanford. Back home Sunday, the North Carolina State guard immediately established a new high-point mark. Williams scored 21 points, Scott Wood added 19, including five 3-pointers, in the Wolfpack’s 65-60 win over North Carolina Central at Reynolds Coliseum.
N.C. State (6-3) snapped a two-game losing streak that included a heartbreaking loss at Maples Pavilion in which Williams scored 12 second-half points. The senior picked up right where he left off, scoring seven points early as N.C. State went up 9-0.
N.C. Central (5-5) started cold, not scoring its first points until the 13:42 mark and hitting just two of its first 13 field goal attempts. But the visiting Eagles’ 7-0 run, capped by a dunk from Dominique Sutton, made it 21-15 and forced an N.C. State time out with 8:01 to play in the opening half.
The Wolfpack went up by as much as 15 points in the second half before N.C. Central fought back. The Eagles, who came into the game second in the country in scoring but had their second-lowest point total of the season, cut the deficit to three points with under two minutes to play on baskets by Ray Willis and Sutton, who led the Eagles with 17 and 15 points, respectively.
