Michigan State gave its NCAA Tournament at-large hopes a much-needed boost with a late 9-0 run to finish off visiting Illinois 61-57 on Saturday.
Kalin Lucas led the way with 25 points for Michigan State (15-11, 7-7 Big Ten), which shot 54.2 percent from the floor in the second half.
With the game tied 51-51 and 2:35 left, the Spartans took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Draymond Green. Delvon Roe followed with a layup at the 1:41 mark, and Michigan State added five more foul shots to push the lead to 60-51 with 26 seconds to go.
Neither team led by more than three in the final 15 minutes before the Spartans' last surge.
Demetri McCamey scored 15 points and Mike Davis had 14 for the Fighting Illini (17-10, 7-7).
