DeAngelo Casto scored seven of his 14 points in the final four minutes as Washington State posted a 75-71 victory over California Saturday.
Washington State (17-8, 7-6 Pac-10) got big games off the bench from guards Brock Motum and Faisal Aden. Motum scored a season-high 19 points and Aden added 18 for the Cougars.
California’s Jorge Gutierrez didn’t score his first point until 11:30 remained in the second half, but finished with 19 points to lead the Golden Bears.
Washington State took a double-digit lead with a 14-3 run midway through the second half before Cal clawed back. Gutierrez hit a 3-pointer with 5:20 left to put Cal ahead 58-57. The teams swapped the lead before Casto got hot. Cal still had a chance to send the game to overtime, but Gutierrez missed a 3-pointer with five seconds left.
California (13-12, 6-7) was without freshman standout Allen Crabbe, who suffered a concussion in Thursday’s loss to Washington. Freshman Jeff Powers scored 14 points in place of Crabbe for the Golden Bears, who have lost three straight games.
