Glen Rice Jr. also tied his career high with 24 points and Brian Oliver added seven points and six rebounds for Georgia Tech (8-8, 1-2 ACC), which snapped its three-game losing streak. The Yellow Jackets led 33-32 at halftime and extended their lead to 17 on Shumpert’s dunk with 5:47 remaining.
Harrison Barnes and John Henson each scored 11 points for North Carolina (12-5, 2-1), which has lost four straight to Georgia Tech. Leading scorer Tyler Zeller finished with nine points and four rebounds.
The Tar Heels endured their worst shooting game of the season, going 16 of 57 (28.1 percent) from the field and 2 of 12 (16.7 percent) from beyond the arc.
Georgia Tech rebounded from last Wednesday's 25-point loss at Clemson by dominating the second half against North Carolina, forcing 13 turnovers and limiting the Tar Heels to 5 of 25 (20 percent) shooting.
Shumpert, who was 13 of 23 from the field, set his career-high total exactly one year ago when he scored 30 in a Georgia Tech win at North Carolina.
