Charlotte got a break and took advantage of it. After Glenn Rice Jr. missed two free throws with three seconds left in the first overtime, Charlotte scored the first nine points of the second overtime en route to an 86-83 victory on Sunday in a non-conference matchup.
Rice finished with 21 points for Georgia Tech, but was 0-of-4 from the free throw line, including the pair of costly misses in overtime. Derrio Green scored 21 points and Javarris Barnett and Phil Jones each scored 15 points for the 49ers.
Barnett hit two free throws to start the second overtime and Charlotte never relinquished the lead the rest of the way.
Iman Shumpert scored 28 points for the Yellowjackets (7-6), who have lost two of their last three games and now open Atlantic Coast Conference play with a tough road trip with games at Boston College and Clemson.
Chris Braswell scored 14 points for Charlotte (8-6), which has won four in a row.
