Iman Shumpert made sure Richmond’s trip to the Virgin Islands wouldn’t have a winning ending.
Overcoming mediocre shooting from the field, Shumpert finished with 21 points and six rebounds as Georgia Tech sprung a mild upset over the Spiders, 67-54, in Battle of Atlantis action Saturday at Paradise Island in the Bahamas.
Shumpert was 6-of-15 from the field for the Ramblin Wreck (6-4), who have won two straight following a three-game losing streak. He was 2-of-4 from 3-point range and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Maurice Miller finished with 11 points for Georgia Tech.
Richmond (8-3), which saw its two-game winning streak broken, had three double-digit scorers. Justin Harper led with 15 points and five rebounds, Kevin Anderson chipped in 12 points and Darien Brothers scored 10 points. The Spiders were 20-of-51 (39.2 percent) from the field while Georgia Tech was 21-of-47 (44.7 percent).
Georgia Tech had a 27-24 lead at halftime, but Richmond rallied and took a 36-34 lead on a 3-pointer by Anderson with 14:15 remaining, but a Jason Morris jumper with 13:56 to go tied the score at 36-36. It was the start of a 6-0 run, and the Ramblin Wreck never trailed again.
