Rangers 3, Mariners 2: Leonys Martin’s bloop single in the bottom of the ninth capped a two-run rally with two outs as host Texas stunned Seattle.
Martin’s hit to short left field off Seattle closer Fernando Rodney (0-1) capped a dramatic comeback by the Rangers, who have recorded four walk-off victories among their six home wins this season. Brad Miller’s throwing error on what would have been the final out of the game loaded the bases, and Rodney uncorked a wild pitch to score Kevin Kouzmanoff with the tying run before Martin’s hit.
Pedro Figueroa (1-1) earned the victory with a scoreless ninth after Seattle starter Felix Hernandez and Texas starter Yu Darvish hooked up in a tense pitchers' duel. Hernandez allowed one run on four hits with nine strikeouts in seven-plus innings, while Darvish allowed two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts in seven frames.
Texas was stymied offensively until the eighth, when Martin belted a leadoff triple off Hernandez and scored on Michael Choice’s sacrifice fly off reliever Charlie Furbush. After Rodney quickly recorded the first two outs of the ninth, Kouzmanoff singled, Mitch Moreland walked and Miller’s throw to second pulled Robinson Cano off the bag to load the bases and give the Rangers new life.
Seattle scored both of its runs in the second when Nick Franklin tripled with one out and scored on Mike Zunino’s two-out single to center. Abraham Almonte followed with a single to left to score Dustin Ackley.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Darvish has a 0.82 ERA with 23 strikeouts and four walks in 22 innings pitched, but the Rangers have yet to score a run while the right-hander has been in the game. … Hernandez leads the majors with 39 strikeouts. … After going 3-for-7 in his past two games, Texas 1B Prince Fielder went 0-for-4 to drop his average to .172.
