Yankees 7, Reds 1: Brett Gardner scored Brian Roberts on three occasions and Brandon McCarthy struck out nine over six solid innings as host New York claimed a series win over Cincinnati.
Gardner brought in Roberts with an RBI single in the third and sacrifice flies in the fifth and sixth innings for the Yankees, who collected their majors-best 12th interleague victory. Carlos Beltran launched a solo homer and Kelly Johnson's slow roller over the first-base bag scored two in the sixth as New York breezed to a second straight win to begin its 10-game homestand.
Making his second start since being acquired from Arizona, McCarthy (4-10) allowed one run on six hits and did not walk a batter in his Yankee Stadium debut. All-Star Alfredo Simon (12-4) was thwarted in his bid for a majors-best 13th victory and saw his string of eight straight quality starts come to an end after permitting four runs (two earned) on five hits in as many innings.
After going 2-for-4 in New York's 4-3 victory on Friday, Beltran opened the scoring with two outs in the second inning by depositing an 0-2 hanging curveball from Simon over the wall in right field. The Yankees tacked on another run in the third as Roberts reached second after right fielder Jay Bruce dropped a fly ball and came around to score following Gardner's single to right.
Chris Heisey trimmed New York's lead to 2-1 in the fifth by jumping on an 0-1 cutter from McCarthy and sending it over the wall in left. New York answered in the bottom half of the frame as a pair of singles and a passed ball put runners in scoring position before Gardner's sacrifice fly and Derek Jeter's RBI single put the team comfortably ahead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cincinnati general manager Walt Jocketty and 3B Todd Frazier presented the retiring Jeter with signed jerseys of former Reds captains Dave Concepcion and Barry Larkin enclosed in a picture frame. ... Heisey has two homers in his last four contests after belting a pair in his first 67 games this season. ... The Yankees have signed 26 of their 39 draft choices, but RHP Mariano Rivera remained without an agreement. The son of the former New York closer with the same name is expected to return to Iona College for his junior season.
