Tigers 4, Twins 3: J.D. Martinez scored Torii Hunter on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning as host Detroit took advantage of a key error to take the rubber game of a three-game series.
With one out in the ninth, Victor Martinez lifted a fly ball to the track in right that Oswaldo Arcia dropped, allowing Hunter to race from first to third. J.D. Martinez then lofted a fly to center and Sam Fuld's throw home was up the line and late as Hunter raced across.
Joe Nathan (3-2) worked a scoreless top of the ninth for the win in relief of Rick Porcello, who allowed three runs in seven innings. Nick Castellanos had two RBIs for the Tigers, who have won three of four following a 2-8 stretch.
Victor Martinez started the scoring with a run-scoring double in the first off Ricky Nolasco, who gave up three runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 frames. Castellanos made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly in the second but Minnesota took the lead with three in the sixth, capped by Kurt Suzuki's go-ahead RBI single.
Castellanos tied it with an RBI double off Nolasco in the bottom of the frame and Hunter began the ninth with a base hit through the left side against Casey Fien (3-3). Miguel Cabrera then lined out to shortstop before Arcia's error set up the game-winning RBI for J.D. Martinez.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Twins 3B Trevor Plouffe was placed on the 15-day disabled with a strained right oblique and INF Eduardo Nunez sat out with a tight hamstring. ... LF Josh Willingham and DH Kendrys Morales had RBIs in the Twins' sixth. ... Minnesota opens a three-game series at Boston on Monday while Detroit stays home to host Kansas City in the first of four.
