Iowa State freshman kicker Jace Gilbert missed his third field goal with 27 seconds remaining as host Kansas kept its record perfect Saturday with a 14-11 win over the Cyclones in Lawrence, Kan.
After losing seven straight to the Cyclones, Kansas (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) started a season with five wins for the first time since 2009 after Gilbert pulled the 37-yard, game-tying try wide left.
Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels finished 7 of 14 for 93 yards and ran for just 15 yards but added a rushing score. Devin Neal led Kansas' rushing attack with 75 yards on 12 carries. Daniel Hishaw rushed for 28 yards and scored a TD, but the running back was carted off the field after losing a fumble with 9:05 remaining in the game.
Hunter Dekkers went 30-for-48 for 287 yards and tossed a touchdown pass to Easton Dean and had an interception for the Cyclones (3-2, 0-2). Xavier Hutchinson recorded 101 receiving yards on a career-high 13 catches.
During the final minute of the first quarter, Gilbert lined up a 38-yard field goal attempt but watched it deflect off the right upright to keep the contest scoreless.
On the next series, Kansas put together a seven-play, 79-yard drive. Hishaw ran off the right side and barely slipped into the end zone to put the Jayhawks up 7-0.
Midway through the quarter, Kansas cornerback Cobee Bryant made a spectacular leaping interception of Dekkers. That pick set up Daniels' scoring run to end a 19-yard drive.
Dekkers atoned himself by firing a nine-yard strike to Dean, and holder Blake Clark took a bad PAT snap and scrambled in to make it 14-8, which stood as the halftime score.
Gilbert got a second chance and trimmed the margin to 14-11 by booting a 35-yard field goal with 5:27 left in third.
Iowa State crafted an impressive 72-yard drive that started at its 1. It got second life when Bryant appeared to record his second interception. However, it was overturned upon review.
From 45 yards out, Gilbert again missed -- bouncing a second kick off the right upright -- to keep the three-point deficit with 11:26 left.
