Timmy Allen scored 17 points in 24 minutes as No. 8 Texas dominated early on and rolled to a 79-45 win over visiting San Jose State on Saturday in Austin, Texas, as part of the Abe Lemons Classic.
Texas (3-1), employing a swarming defense that overwhelmed San Jose State from the start, roared out of the gate and never looked back.
The Longhorns led by 18 points eight minutes into the game, by 30 at halftime and by 34 points with 7:54 left, waltzing to a win that was even easier than the statistics depict.
Tre Mitchell added 14 points for the Longhorns, with Andrew Jones hitting for 13 and Brock Cunningham scoring a career-high 10 points. Texas won easily despite getting just 2 points from Marcus Carr, the preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
The Longhorns outshot San Jose State 51.8 percent to 31.9 percent, forced 27 Spartans turnovers and finished with 36 points in the paint.
Tibet Gorener led the Spartans (1-3) with 12 points while Josh O'Garro added 11. San Jose State has lost three straight games.
The Longhorns scored the game's first seven points and raced out to a 23-5 lead after a jump hook by Mitchell at the 12:04 mark of the first half. Texas finished the half on a 19-3 run over the final nearly nine minutes and led 47-17 at the break.
Allen paced Texas with 15 points by halftime, with Jones adding 11 points. The Longhorns shot 64.3 percent in the half, made 8 of their 9 free throws, had 22 points in the paint and scored 25 points off of Spartans turnovers.
Moore led the Spartans with 5 points at halftime. San Jose State had more turnovers (19) than points in the first half and shot just 28.6 percent.
