Tyler Burton's jumper with 1:08 left Monday gave No. 19 Richmond the lead for good and Jacob Gilyard added a game-clinching 3-pointer on the Spiders' next possession as they dumped visiting Wofford 77-72 on Monday.

The Terriers (2-1) took their last lead when Storm Murphy, who led all scorers with 21 points, made two foul shots with 1:20 remaining. But Burton hit a short shot and Gilyard canned a back-breaking 25-footer with 19.5 seconds on the clock.

Gilyard, who paced four Richmond players in double figures with 18 points while adding six assists, five rebounds and five steals, added a foul shot with 9.9 seconds left.

Playing for the first time since defeating then-No. 10 Kentucky on Nov. 29, the Spiders improved to 3-0. Their two games last week were canceled because of COVID-19 issues within the program.

Grant Golden added 15 points while Burton scored 12 and Nathan Cayo hit for 11 points. Richmond converted 48.3 percent of its field-goal tries and enjoyed a 38-24 advantage in points in the paint.

Wofford, which played its first game against a Division I program, got a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double from Messiah Jones. Tray Hollowell scored 15 points and dished out five assists, but the Terriers were outscored 12-2 after Jones' bucket put them ahead 70-65 with 2:18 left.

Despite its layoff, Richmond came out locked in, particularly on defense. Wofford didn't score a point until Hollowell knocked down a free throw 6:12 into the game, at which point it already trailed 11-1.

The margin reached 16-3 after Golden converted a turnaround jumper with 11:52 left in the half. At that point, the Terriers finally found traction. A 12-3 spurt that lasted more than four minutes pulled them within 19-15 after a Hollowell free throw.

From that point, the Spiders maintained a lead between three and nine points for the half's remainder. A last-possession layup by Andre Gustavson with 2.4 seconds remaining enabled them to head for the locker room with a 37-30 advantage.

The difference was that Richmond canned 53.6 percent from the field before the break in stark contrast to Wofford's 34.4 percent accuracy. Overall, the Spiders hit 48.3 percent of their field-goal attempts while the Terriers made 44.3 percent.
