Yankuba Sima scored a career-high 17 points to help St. John's earn a 63-56 victory over St. Francis of Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y.
Sima, a freshman center, also pulled down nine rebounds for the Red Storm (5-3), who had dropped three of their last four entering Sunday's game.
Durand Johnson, a graduate student guard-forward, had 19 points and redshirt junior forward Christian Jones had 13 points and nine boards for St. John's.
Federico Mussini, a freshman guard who averaged 17.3 points over the Red Storm's first six games, was held to six on 1-of-9 shooting.
Senior forward Antonio Jenifer and guard Yunus Hopkinson each had 10 points while both senior guard Tyreek Jewel and senior forward Chris Hooper finished with nine for the Terriers (3-5).
St. Francis of Brooklyn held a 19-12 late in the opening half, but St. John's fought back with a 13-4 run and led 33-25 at halftime.
Hopkinson's layup with 1:04 brought the Terriers within 57-55, but Johnson's jumper and a pair of free throws in the final minute sealed the win.
