North Carolina State 58, No. 18 North Carolina 46: Anthony Barber scored 15 points, Ralston Turner and Trevor Lacey added 14 apiece, and the Wolfpack held the Tar Heels to a season-low point total while recording their first win in Chapel Hill since 2003.
Turner was 4-of-8 from 3-point range and BeeJay Anya had six blocks for N.C. State (17-11, 8-7 ACC), which has won three straight over Louisville, Virginia Tech and North Carolina to improve its NCAA Tournament hopes. The Wolfpack snapped a four-game losing streak in the series and defeated the Tar Heels for the second time in their last 19 meetings.
Justin Jackson led North Carolina (19-9, 9-6) with 16 points while Kennedy Meeks collected 12 points and 14 rebounds. Marcus Paige was held to seven points along with seven assists and J.P. Tokoto grabbed seven rebounds for the Tar Heels, who shot 34.5 percent and lost for the fifth time in their last seven games.
North Carolina shot 28 percent in the opening stanza and trailed 29-18 at the break after missing its final seven shots. The Wolfpack extended their lead to 36-20 with just under 16 minutes left before Jackson scored six points during a 12-0 run over the next four minutes to help the Tar Heels pull within four.
Paige missed his first three 3-point attempts before drilling a three with 2:32 remaining to cut the deficit to 50-46, but N.C. State closed the game on an 8-0 run while converting 6-of-9 from the foul line. Paige, who scored 23 points in last month’s 81-79 victory over the Wolfpack, was 3-of-8 shooting and did not attempt a free throw.
GAME NOTEBOOK: North Carolina’s 46 points are the fewest scored by the Tar Heels in the Smith Center. … N.C. State outrebounded the Tar Heels 41-38 and improved to 4-29 all-time against North Carolina coach Roy Williams. … Abdul-Malik Abu, Lacey and Anya grabbed six rebounds apiece for the Wolfpack, who were 11-of-16 from the foul line compared to 5-of-9 for the Tar Heels.
