No. 6 Wisconsin 70, Nebraska 55: Frank Kaminsky returned from a one-game absence to score 22 points as the host Badgers pulled away in the second half to rout the Cornhuskers.
Nigel Hayes contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists for Wisconsin (16-2, 4-1 Big Ten), which went 11-of-21 beyond the arc one game after Kaminsky sat out due to a concussion during Sunday’s surprising loss at Rutgers. Sam Dekker and Bronson Koenig chipped in 11 points apiece as the Badgers had little trouble in their first game without starting point guard Traevon Jackson, who is expected to miss six weeks with a broken foot.
Terran Petteway poured in a season-high 27 points for Nebraska (10-7, 2-3), which received more field goals from its leading scorer (11) than the rest of the team combined (10). Shavon Shields was the only other Cornhusker to make a notable impact, finishing with eight points and six assists.
Petteway scored 20 of Nebraska’s 27 first-half points, but it wasn’t nearly enough as Kaminsky hit a 3-pointer and a jumper during a 9-0 spurt over the final 2½ minutes before the break to give Wisconsin a 10-point edge at intermission. Walter Pitchford twice closed the gap to four with a triple and a dunk early in the second half before the Badgers rolled off the next 13 points to extend their lead to 53-36 on Dekker’s triple with less than 11½ minutes to go.
Kaminsky’s 3-pointer with just over eight minutes left stretched Wisconsin’s margin to 22 before Petteway ended Nebraska’s field-goal drought that lasted nearly nine minutes with a jumper on the other end. The Badgers did not allow the Cornhuskers to get any closer than the final margin the rest of the way.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The teams combined for 11 turnovers, with the Badgers committing six and the Cornhuskers finishing with a season-low five. … Petteway missed a late 3-point attempt before the starters were pulled late in the game, leaving him with 997 career points. … Wisconsin improved to 100-14 at home in Big Ten play under coach Bo Ryan.
