Mike Krzyzewski became the winningest coach in Division I college basketball history as No. 6 Duke pulled away early in the second half and held on through a late flurry to earn a 74-69 victory over Michigan State in the State Farm Champions Challenge at Madison Square Garden.
The Blue Devils (3-0) led by just one, 41-40, before back-to-back 3-pointers by Andre Dawkins and Ryan Kelly sparked a prolonged 20-1 run that made it 61-41 with 9:17 remaining. Kelly and Dawkins each scored seven during the surge to help secure Krzyzewski's 903rd career victory, one more than Bob Knight.
Duke buried the Spartans (0-2) with its outside shooting, making 10 of 20 3-point attempts.
Dawkins alone went 6-for-10 from long range en route to a game-high 26 points, while Seth Curry added 20 points and three assists.
Keith Appling scored 22 points to lead Michigan State, which made six consecutive shots in the final 2:10 but still finished just 26-for-61 (42.6 percent) from the field. Brandon Wood added 15 points in defeat.
