Guards Malcolm Delaney and Dorenzo Hudson combined for 27 of their 40 points in the first half and No. 24 Virginia Tech withstood a fast start and some hot shooting by host UNC Greensboro before posting an easy 92-70 victory on Sunday.
Delaney finished with 23 points and shot 8-of-12 from the floor and added four assists and four steals for the Hokies (2-1), who were coming off a 73-57 loss Tuesday to No. 3 Kansas State. Hudson finished with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
The Spartans (0-3) jumped to an early 9-3 lead and shot 59 percent (13-of-22) in the first half, but committed 16 turnovers and trailed 43-32 at the half. Tech’s guards shot a combined 10-of-15 in the opening 20 minutes.
Jeff Allen scored seven of his 17 points in the first seven minutes as the Hokies pulled away and cruised the rest of the way.
Kyle Randall scored 15 points and Aloysius Henry added 14 for UNC Greensboro, which finished shooting 54.8 percent and committing 29 turnovers.
