Wil Myers hit a two-run triple and scored on an error in the third and the San Diego Padres held off the visiting Cincinnati Reds over the final three innings Sunday to score a 3-2 victory and complete their first sweep of a four-game series since August 2011.
Both teams failed on a number of scoring chances, combining to go 2-for-19 with runners in scoring position.
All three San Diego runs came off Reds starter Luis Castillo (2-10) in the third inning. Manny Machado singled with one out and was sacrificed to second by Jake Cronenworth. Eric Hosmer then drew a walk.
Myers went the opposite way with a drive into the right field corner, scoring Machado and Hosmer. Joey Votto cut off the throw toward the plate in an attempt to get Myers going into third, but the throw by the Reds first baseman was wide of Eugenio Suarez at third and Myers scored on the error.
After Myers' hit, the Padres went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position for the rest of the game. The Reds went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Dinelson Lamet (2-2) allowed four hits in five innings and a walk with seven strikeouts to pick up the win. Mark Melancon picked up his second save in as many games and his 21st on the season.
Castillo allowed three runs -- two earned -- on six hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in six innings.
The Reds loaded the bases with one out in the seventh against Craig Stammen, but shortstop Ha-Seong Kim turned a sharp grounder by Jonathan India into an inning-ending double play.
Jesse Winker opened the Reds' eighth with a single off Emilio Pagan and Tyler Stephenson followed with a double to put runners at second and third with no one out. Both scored on groundouts by Votto and Suarez.
The Reds had a runner on first with two out in the ninth when Kim ended the game with an over-the-head catch in short right-center.
