OAKLAND, Calif. -- Oakland Atletics right-hander Jesse Chavez's string of tough-luck losses ended Sunday, thanks in large part to catcher Stephen Vogt.
Chavez threw eight shutout innings, and Vogt hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and drove in three runs, leading the A's to a 3-0 victory over the New York Yankees at the O.co Coliseum.
"I was sitting there in the fifth or sixth and I was thinking to myself, 'We have not scored any runs for this guy all year,'" Vogt said. "We knew today all he needed was one run. That’s the kind of day it was for him on the mound. To get him a couple of runs was huge. He was just some kind of awesome today."
Chavez (2-5) allowed seven hits, struck out six and walked none. He threw a career-high 110 pitches and matched his career high for innings pitched.
Chavez won only one of his first seven starts, despite a 2.80 ERA over that span. He received an average of just 1.20 runs of support per game in those seven games, the lowest in the majors dating to April 23 when he made his first start.
"It's good, but I don't look at that every time I go out there," Chavez said of getting more run support Sunday. "I just look at trying to get the offense back in as quick as possible and watch them do their thing. They've been putting great at-bats together all year.
"Now things are starting to go our way, and we'll keep rolling with it."
The A's took three of four games from the Yankees and won a series at home for the first time this season after six losses and a split. They've won six of their last nine games overall.
"I think it's huge any time you win a series, and against the Yankees it's even more special, especially for me, my first time playing against the Yankees," said A's center fielder Billy Burns, who went 3-for-4 and scored twice. "It's cool to win a series and also to beat someone like the Yankees who are such a powerhouse every year. It was fun."
A's right-hander Tyler Clippard pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his seventh save.
The Yankees swept a three-game against Kansas City before coming to Oakland, but they've now gone 5-13 over their past 18 games.
"It's frustrating," Yankees center fielder Brett Gardner said. "They played us tough; they pitched well against us. Kansas City -- maybe the best team in baseball -- we swept them, and then come here and didn't play too well. It's frustrating when you're inconsistent on a personal level and as a team.
"Just keep working hard, playing hard and hopefully good things will happen."
Vogt hit his team-high 11th home run and raised his team-high RBI total to 38.
"It's unbelievable, but you expect it with the work he puts in," Chavez said of Vogt. "He's one of the first ones here every day."
Chavez and Yankees right-hander Adam Warren matched zeros until the bottom of the sixth, when Vogt hit his two-run shot, giving the A's a 2-0 lead.
Burns led off the inning with a soft single to center then stole second and third base.
With one out, Warren threw Vogt a 1-1 fastball, and the catcher hit a towering fly ball that kept carrying over the right field fence.
"Just tried to jam him up and get weak contact," Warren said. "I felt like I made a decent pitch. He just put a good swing on it. I think the wind might have helped him."
The A's made it 3-0 with a run in the eighth. Burns hit a one-out single and moved to third on left fielder Ben Zobrist's single to right. Vogt brought Burns home with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Warren (3-4) allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings. He struck out four and walked one.
"He pitched really well," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He made a mistake. He made one mistake, and unfortunately it cost the game. I think we got a really good performance out of him. It's unfortunate we didn't s
