Mets 4, Phillies 1: Grady Sizemore failed to make an easy catch in left field, allowing two runs to score as New York used a three-run seventh inning to top visiting Philadelphia.
The key error came on a fly ball hit by Juan Lagares, who proceeded to steal second - a play on which Eric Campbell broke for home to make it 4-1. The decisive rally came against reliever Jake Diekman (3-4), while Jeurys Familia pitched the eighth and Jenrry Mejia closed things out in the ninth for his 20th save.
Both rookie starters enjoyed a strong performance in the opener of the three-game series. New York's Jacob deGrom (7-6) gave up one unearned run and four hits in seven innings, while counterpart David Buchanan allowed one run and four hits in six frames.
The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning as David Wright singled with one out and scored two batters later on Travis d'Arnaud's single to center. The Phillies tied it in the seventh, when former Met Marlon Byrd singled, moved to second on an error by first baseman Lucas Duda and scored on Cody Asche's base hit to left.
The visitors failed to score despite having a pair of baserunners to open the fifth. Sizemore reached on a one-out error in the ninth, but Mejia struck out Carlos Ruiz and Asche to end it.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Phillies had won four straight games, including a sweep of the National League East-leading Washington Nationals this week. ... Philadelphia 2B Chase Utley (2-for-4) was the only player on either team to record multiple hits. ... deGrom struck out five and worked around two walks in lowering his ERA to 2.94.
