Phillies 6, Astros 5: Ryan Howard hit a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning as Philadelphia rallied to complete a three-game sweep of visiting Houston.
The Phillies scored five runs in the eighth against the Astros' bullpen, beginning with Cody Asche's RBI single and ending with Howard's shot to center field on a 3-2 pitch with two outs. Mario Hollands (2-1) worked two scoreless innings to earn the win before Jonathan Papelbon breezed through the ninth for his 27th save.
Chris Carter hit a pair of two-run homers, Marc Krauss also went deep and Collin McHugh pitched seven terrific innings for the Astros, who watched Josh Fields and Tony Sipp (2-2) waste a 5-1 lead in the eighth. Fields allowed three hits and a run before giving way to Sipp, who gave up a single to Jimmy Rollins and retired Chase Utley before surrendering Howard's decisive hit.
Sean O'Sullivan made his second start of the season for the Phillies, who called up the 26-year-old right-hander after trading previously scheduled starter Roberto Hernandez to the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier in the day. O'Sullivan gave up five runs and seven hits in six innings, including back-to-back blasts in the opening frame.
Carter's homer to left made it 2-0 just three batters into the game, and Krauss followed with a blast into the seats in right. Carlos Ruiz brought the Phillies within 3-1 with an RBI single in the second, but Carter answered right back in the third with a shot just over the center-field wall, making it 5-1.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Phillies will receive two players to be named or cash from the Dodgers in exchange for Hernandez, who had a 3.87 ERA in 23 appearances (20 starts). ... McHugh gave up one run and five hits in seven innings. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter. ... The grand slam was the 13th of Howard's career, extending his franchise record.
