Dodgers 6, Braves 2: Newly acquired Kevin Correia allowed one run in six innings and visiting Los Angeles used five singles in a three-run sixth to capture the opener of a four-game series.
Carl Crawford finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Yasiel Puig added two hits and two runs scored as the Dodgers extended their lead in the National League West to five games over idle San Francisco. Correia (6-13), acquired in a Saturday trade with Minnesota, gave up four hits with five strikeouts and went 2-for-2 at the plate.
Freddie Freeman collected two hits, and Justin Upton and Evan Gattis drove in runs for Atlanta, which lost for the 10th time in 12 games to drop four games behind idle Washington in the NL East and 2 ½ games back of Pittsburgh for the second NL wild-card spot. Julio Teheran (10-9) surrendered five runs on nine hits with six strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings.
Correia led off the sixth with a single and, after singles from Dee Gordon and Puig loaded the bases, scored when Adrian Gonzalez delivered a bloop single to right to tie the game at 1. Gordon scored when Crawford legged out an infield single, and Puig came in on Justin Turner’s groundout that could have been an inning-ending double play were it not for Emilio Bonifacio’s bobble to give Los Angeles a 3-1 advantage.
Correia retired the first nine hitters he faced before Bonifacio led off the fourth with a single, later scoring on Upton’s one-out single to center. The Braves left Freeman stranded at second in the sixth, and Los Angeles made it 6-1 in the eighth with three runs on Crawford’s RBI single, A.J. Ellis’ fielder’s choice and a throwing error on Ramiro Pena trying to turn an inning-ending double play.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Teheran picked off Crawford in the second and two innings later picked off Puig. … Atlanta 2B Tommy La Stella left in the second inning with a right upper hamstring cramp. … Los Angeles RF Matt Kemp extended his hitting streak to seven games with a ground-rule double to left in the eighth.
