Phillies 9, Mets 4: Domonic Brown belted a three-run homer to break the game open in the fifth inning and Ryan Howard knocked in a pair of runs as visiting Philadelphia rolled over New York.
Rookie Jonathan Pettibone (1-0) earned his first major-league victory in his second start, allowing three runs and seven hits over five innings. John Mayberry Jr. also hit a solo homer in the five-run fifth while Michael Young collected three hits for the Phillies, who produced their season high in runs.
John Buck hit his eighth homer and captain David Wright added a pair of hits and an RBI for New York, which lost for the eighth time in 11 games. Mets starter Shaun Marcum (0-1) went four innings in his season debut, allowing three runs on five hits.
Pettibone led off the third inning with a single for his first major-league hit and moved to second on a single by Jimmy Rollins. Chase Utley’s ground-rule double brought Pettibone home, Rollins scored on a wild pitch and Howard’s sacrifice fly capped the rally as the Phillies took a 3-1 lead.
Ike Davis delivered a sacrifice fly in the fourth to bring the Mets within 3-2 but the Phillies responded with five in the fifth, ignited by a leadoff double from Rollins. Howard singled home Rollins before Brown and Mayberry connected for back-to-back blasts off reliever Robert Carson.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Young is 11-for-19 with six runs scored, one homer and three RBIs against the Mets this season. … New York optioned LHP Josh Edgin to Double-A Binghamton of the Eastern League to make room for Marcum on the roster. … Phillies C Carlos Ruiz is expected to rejoin the team Sunday for the final game of the series after finishing his 25-game suspension for testing positive for an amphetamine.
