Phillies 6, Marlins 1: Cole Hamels struck out a season-high 11 to snap a career-high six-game losing streak and Domonic Brown capped a five-run seventh inning with his National League-leading 18th homer as Philadelphia completed a three-game home sweep of Miami.
Jimmy Rollins delivered the go-ahead run with an RBI single off reliever A.J. Ramos (0-2) before Ryan Howard drove in a pair of runs with his first triple since April 2011 for the Phillies (30-30), who reached the .500 mark for the first time since April 14. Hamels (2-9) yielded one run on four hits and a walk over seven frames.
Miami starter Jacob Turner left after six solid innings, but Ramos ran into trouble after retiring Freddy Galvis to open the seventh. Delmon Young and Ben Revere each singled and, after a Michael Young flyout, Rollins’ bloop to center scored pinch runner Cesar Hernandez and gave the Phillies a 2-1 advantage.
Howard followed with a sinking liner that got past a diving Marcell Ozuna in right field and rolled to the wall, allowing Revere and Rollins to score. Brown put the game away five pitches later, sending a 3-1 changeup over the fence in right for his third home run in June and 10th homer in his last 12 games.
Philadelphia established a lead in the second as John Mayberry Jr. – who hit a walk-off grand slam in Tuesday’s 11-inning win – singled to left and scored on Erik Kratz’s RBI double. Derek Dietrich evened it up in the fourth when he lined a cut fastball from Hamels deep into the right-field stands.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Home plate umpire John Hirschbeck was removed from the game in the bottom of the seventh with an injury to the top of his hand after Marlins backup catcher Miguel Olivo was unable to get his glove in the way of a fastball from Ramos. Hirschbeck left the field under his own power and the game was resumed after a 15-minute delay with second base umpire Jim Reynolds taking Hirschbeck’s place behind the plate. … Philadelphia had provided Hamels with only two total runs of support in his first three starts this season against Miami. … Howard’s triple was the 18th of his career.
