Athletics 4, Tigers 3 (12): Josh Donaldson hit a walk-off homer with one out in the 12th inning off Brayan Villarreal and Oakland extended its winning streak to nine games.
Chris Resop (1-0) earned the win after retiring one batter in the top half of the inning, when the Tigers stranded Ramon Santiago at third after he tripled with one out off Jerry Blevins. The Athletics’ winning streak is the club’s longest in April since 1981, when they won 11 in a row.
Prince Fielder gave the Tigers an early lead with his two-out, three-run homer in the third off Bartolo Colon, who gave up three runs in seven innings. Fielder went 4-for-5 and came within a triple of hitting for the cycle.
The Tigers committed their first error of the season in the third when starter Max Scherzer threw past third baseman Miguel Cabrera trying to catch Eric Sogard stealing, allowing Sogard to score the Athletics’ first run.
Oakland cut the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Josh Reddick, who went 1-for-4 after missing the previous three games with a sprained right wrist. Coco Crisp tied the game when he singled in a run off Drew Smyly with two outs in the seventh.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Athletics LF Yoenis Cespedes initially stayed in the game after sliding awkwardly into second base in the eighth, but exited in the 11th with an apparent hand injury. … Scherzer had 11 strikeouts while giving up two runs over six innings. …Crisp left the game in the ninth with a strained left groin and is listed as day-to-day.
