Reds 11, Phillies 2: Mike Leake matched a career high with seven strikeouts, had three hits – including his first career triple – and scored three times as host Cincinnati completed a three-game sweep of Philadelphia.
Zack Cozart finished with three hits – including a two-run homer – and scored three times while Brandon Phillips drove in three runs with two early singles for the Reds. Leake (1-0) allowed three hits over seven scoreless innings, throwing 58 of his 81 pitches for strikes in his best outing of the season.
After Phillips singled home Cozart to open the scoring in the first, Cincinnati sent 10 batters to the plate against John Lannan (0-1) during a five-run second. Todd Frazier snapped Lannan’s long homerless streak with a solo shot to right and Leake ended a seven-pitch at-bat with a liner to center over the head of Ben Revere.
Derrick Robinson followed with a sharp grounder to right to plate another run and Jay Bruce capped the outburst with a two-run single to right to end the night for Lannan, who surrendered six runs and eight hits over 1 2/3 innings.
Devin Mesoraco added an RBI double and Phillips scored Mesoraco and Leake with a soft line drive into right to stretch the Reds’ lead to 9-0 off reliever Raul Valdes before Cozart delivered a two-run shot. Pinch hitter Freddy Galvis ended the shutout in the eighth with a two-run homer off Justin Freeman.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Lannan, who entered the game with the major’s longest active streak without allowing a homer, saw it snapped at 75 1/3 innings. … Cincinnati scored at least 11 runs for the third time this season. … Lannan is the first Philadelphia starter in the last eight games not to pitch at least six innings and allow two earned runs or fewer.
