Red Sox 7, Yankees 4: Clay Buchholz pitched seven strong innings and visiting Boston collected 13 hits to clinch the season-opening series with rival New York.
Buchholz (1-0) allowed a run and six hits while striking out four and walking a pair for the Red Sox, who won their first season-opening series since 2008. Jacoby Ellsbury drove in two runs and Shane Victorino had two hits, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base for Boston.
Hiroki Kuroda (0-1) started for the Yankees but had to be removed in the second after taking a line drive off his pitching hand. Vernon Wells hit a three-run homer in the eighth and Travis Hafner added a solo shot.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia singled in a run in the first and Victorino began the second with a line drive up the middle that glanced off Kuroda’s fingertips. The right-hander lost his command after that, hitting Jackie Bradley Jr. and issuing a one-out walk to load the bases before hitting Daniel Nava to force in a run.
Cody Eppley came on and induced a double play to get New York out of the jam but could not hold the Red Sox down during a four-run rally in the third. Victorino drove in a run with a two-out single and Bradley’s first major-league hit made it a 4-0 gap before Adam Warren came on in relief and yielded Ellsbury’s two-run single to center.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Joel Hanrahan worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to pick up his first save with Boston. … Kuroda was diagnosed with a bruised right middle finger and will undergo an X-ray. The Yankees are already without projected starter Phil Hughes (bulging disc) along with a slew of injuries to the everyday lineup including Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson. … Former Red Sox 3B Kevin Youkilis is 3-for-8 with two runs scored in his first two games with New York.
