Cardinals 7, Diamondbacks 1: Carlos Beltran homered and drove in three runs while Matt Carpenter collected three hits and scored three times as host St. Louis rolled in the series opener.
Yadier Molina had a homer and two RBIs and Lance Lynn (8-1) worked seven strong innings for the Cardinals, who have not lost back-to-back games since dropping three straight from April 27-29. St. Louis was defeated by San Francisco on Sunday.
Allen Craig opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning before Molina and David Freese hit run-scoring base hits in the third for a 3-0 lead. Beltran got into the act with an RBI single in the fourth and, after Molina led off the fifth with his fourth blast, belted a two-run shot an inning later to cap his three-hit game.
The support was more than enough for Lynn, who limited Arizona to one run and five hits. The right-hander, who struck out six and walked one, has yielded fewer than two runs in six of his 12 starts this season.
Trevor Cahill (3-6) was tagged for five runs and nine hits in five innings as the Diamondbacks fell to 2-3 on their eight-game road trip.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Diamondbacks 3B Martin Prado went 0-for-4, ending his hitting streak at eight games. ... Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt – the National League leader in RBIs – drove in his team’s lone run with a groundout in the sixth. ... Diamondbacks 2B Willie Bloomquist went 2-for-4 and is 5-for-8 in two contests since missing the first two months of the campaign with an oblique strain.
