Athletics 5, Indians 1: Seth Smith hit a two-run homer to help Tyson Ross pick up his first win of the year as Oakland avoided being swept at home by Cleveland.

After Kila Ka’aihue led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a walk against Justin Masterson (0-2), Smith drove a 1-0 pitch over the right-field wall to put the Athletics in front. Ka’aihue scored another run in the fifth on a base hit by Kurt Suzuki.

Ross (1-0) got the win despite walking five batters, holding the Indians to one run on four hits over 6 2/3 innings. Jordan Norberto finished the seventh inning and Ryan Cook worked the eighth to set the table for Grant Balfour, who picked up his fifth save.

Masterson allowed four runs on six hits and six walks in five innings for Cleveland, which had won seven of its previous eight on a nine-game, 10-day road trip.

Travis Hafner’s two-out double off Ross in the top of the first plated Shin-Soo Choo to give the Indians an early lead. Oakland pulled even in the third on an RBI double by Cliff Pennington, who drove in the final Oakland run with an eighth-inning single.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Oakland CF Coco Crisp, still battling the flu, missed his fifth consecutive game. ... Cleveland gave regular 1B Casey Kotchman the day off, starting Jose Lopez in his place. ... The Athletics had lost eight of their previous 10 meetings with the Indians.
