Padres 2, Nationals 1: Mark Kotsay came off the bench to hit a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth and the Padres rallied to snap the Nationals’ five-game winning streak.
Andrew Cashner (1-1) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the win, and Huston Street worked around a two-out single in the ninth inning for his second save.
Jayson Werth gave the Nationals a one-run lead with his seventh-inning home run off Edinson Volquez, who allowed three hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings.
Nationals starter Edwin Jackson remained winless in six career starts against San Diego despite giving up six hits with six strikeouts over 6 2/3 shutout innings.
After leaving the bases loaded in the fourth and seventh innings, San Diego pulled ahead when Kotsay’s pinch-hit double to deep center field scored Orlando Hudson and Cameron Maybin.
Tyler Clippard (1-2) struck out Nick Hundley with the bases loaded to end the seventh inning, but he struggled in the eighth when he walked Hudson and allowed Maybin to reach first on a bunt single.
San Diego, which improved to 2-11 when trailing after seven innings, has scored two or fewer runs 10 times this season.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Yonder Alonso became the first Padre to hit a pair of doubles in back-to-back home games since Tony Gwynn in 1998…Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman (shoulder) missed his fourth straight game and could be headed to the disabled list…The Padres placed reliever Micah Owings on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right forearm and recalled Dale Thayer from Triple-A Tucson...San Diego pinch hitters are 13-for-30 (.433) this season.
