Phillies 4, Marlins 0: Cole Hamels pitched his second straight shutout - a seven-hitter - and extended his scoreless streak to 22
innings as visiting Philadelphia snapped a five-game losing streak to
Miami.
Hamels (13-6), who pitched a five-hitter against Atlanta on Tuesday, defeated the Marlins for the first time in four starts
this season. He struck out five and walked one en route to his sixth career shutout and 12th complete game.
Juan Pierre had two hits, including an RBI triple, and Chase Utley had a
run-scoring double for the Phillies, who won for the third time in four
games.
Jose Reyes and Donovan Solano had two hits apiece for the Marlins, who have lost six of their last nine contests.
Nathan Eovaldi (3-8) fell to 2-2 in four starts since arriving from Los Angeles in the
Hanley Ramirez trade. He allowed three runs (two earned)
and eight hits in five innings.
Hamels struck out Giancarlo Stanton with the bases loaded to end the
first inning and allowed only five hits the rest of the way,
With one out in the third, Jimmy Rollins and Pierre singled before Utley
stroked a double down the left-field line to score Rollins. With two
outs, Pierre scored on third baseman Greg Dobbs' fielding error on a routine grounder by John Mayberry Jr. to make it 2-0.
Pierre laced a two-out triple down the right-field line to score Rollins
in the fourth and Erik Kratz delivered a sacrifice fly with the bases
loaded in the seventh to put the Phillies ahead 4-0.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Hamels is 2-2 with a 1.50 ERA since signing a
six-year, $144 million extension July 25. ... Hamels entered the game 0-3 with a 5.21 ERA against Miami this season and 6-10 lifetime. ... Marlins RHP Carlos
Zambrano allowed one run in two innings Monday and is 2-0 with a 2.17
ERA in six relief appearances since he was demoted to the bullpen July 27. ... Stanton robbed Kratz of extra
bases with a diving catch just shy of the warning track to end the
second inning. ... Miami INF/OF Emilio Bonifacio (thumb) said he will start a rehab stint
with Class A Jupiter on Wednesday and expects to rejoin the Marlins on Sunday in Colorado.
