Gerard Coleman scored 21 points and Providence overcame a frigid shooting night on its home floor to outlast Southern 59-53 in the South Padre Invitational on Tuesday.
The Friars (4-0) shot only 19 percent (5-for-26) from the floor in the first half, but still took a nine-point lead into halftime thanks to a massive differential in foul shots. Providence was 19-for-26 from the line in the opening period while the Jaguars (1-3) had only two attempts.
Southern tied the game at 43 with 8:32 remaining on a jump shot by Quinton Doggett, but the Friars went back in front to stay with back-to-back buckets by Lee Goldsbrough and Coleman.
Coleman also grabbed 11 rebounds for Providence, which shot 26.5 percent from the field.
Mike Celestin scored 18 points for the Jaguars.
