Matt Gatens led five scorers in double figures with 27 points as Iowa rolled over visiting North Carolina A&T, 95-79.
Melsahn Basabe recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Eric may added 20 and nine for the Hawkeyes (2-0), who dominated on the glass, 53-32.
Gatens shot 9 of 15 from the floor and knocked down four 3-pointers, doing most of his damage in the first half as Iowa opened up a 50-34 lead at the break. The Aggies could not match up with the Hawkeyes inside, surrendering 23 second-chance points and 28 points in the paint as May and Basabe had their way.
The one thing that kept it from being a blowout was some sloppy ball handling. The Hawkeyes committed 22 turnovers, led by May’s five.
Iowa, which has missed the NCAA Tournament each of the last five seasons, will get a pair of strong tests from mid-major teams over the next week when it faces Northern Iowa and Creighton.
North Carolina A&T (0-2), which was crushed at Creighton in its opener on Friday, starts the season with 12 of 14 games on the road.
Marc Hill scored 20 points to lead the Aggies.
