Terrell Stoglin scored a team-high 22 points and Maryland started the second half fast to shake free for a 71-62 victory over visiting North Carolina-Wilmington in the season opener for both teams.
Ashton Pankey chipped in with 13 points and James Padgett added a career-high 12 for Maryland, which won its 35th consecutive home opener and 10th straight season opener.
The Terps scored the first six points and 17 of the first 25 after halftime to take a double-digit lead and give coach Mark Turgeon his first win at Maryland. UNC-Wilmington crept within 65-59 with 2:04 left, but could not get closer.
Freshman Adam Smith led UNC-Wilmington with 23 points. He made four of his five 3-point attempts and scored 16 in the first half for the Seahawks, coached by former North Carolina standout Buzz Peterson.
Maryland was sloppy early, but began to get things rolling in the middle of the first half. Stoglin carried the Terps with 14 points, including a spinning layup and free throw with 12.7 seconds left for a 32-27 halftime lead.
