Erving Walker’s driving layup with 14.7 seconds left capped a wild second half and gave No. 19 Florida a 61-60 home victory over Tennessee Saturday.
Walker led Florida (20-5, 9-2 SEC) with 16 points, as the Gators rallied from a seven-point second-half deficit. Tennessee (15-10, 5-5 SEC) was led by Scotty Hopson’s 22 points.
Florida moved 2 ½ games ahead of Vanderbilt and Georgia in the SEC East. Tennessee fell to 3 ½ games back.
The Volunteers led by as many as seven in the second half, taking a 45-38 lead on Hopson’s layup with 10:47 remaining. The Gators rallied, using a 10-2 run to push ahead 48-47. Vernon Macklin’s steal and dunk with 8:34 remaining capped the spurt.
Two Walker free throws gave the Gators a 59-56 lead with 2:16 left, but Brian Williams hit a jumper and Cameron Tatum scored to put the Volunteers ahead 60-59 with 47 seconds to go.
After Alex Tyus missed two free throws with 30.7 seconds left for Florida, Tatum missed a free throw. Walker then drove the length of the court for the game-winner.
Melvin Goins missed a 3-point attempt for Tennessee with two seconds left.
