No. 9 BYU couldn't avoid a letdown after taking down No. 4 San Diego State earlier this week, losing to New Mexico 86-77 Saturday at The Pit.

National-sensation Jimmer Fredette's 32 points on 12-of-26 shooting were not enough for the Cougars as they dropped their first game in Mountain West Conference play.

New Mexico (15-7, 3-4 MWC) proved gutsy at home, overcoming a 10-point deficit with 14:19 left in the game. Tony Snell's back-to-back 3-pointers in the game’s final minutes created a double-digit cushion the Lobos would never relinquish.

New Mexico torched the nets in the second half with 54 points, outscoring BYU by 13. The Lobos shot a blistering 51 percent on the afternoon.

Kendall Williams and Snell led five Lobos in double figures, each pouring in 16 points. Drew Gordon was integral in the win by adding 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Meanwhile, Fredette demonstrated that he is more than a prolific scorer, dishing out seven assists and collecting five rebounds. Brandon Davies added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Cougars (20-2, 6-1 MWC), who suffered their first loss in 12 games.
