Jimmer Fredette delivered his typical stellar performance with 43 points to lead No. 9 Brigham Young to a 71-58 victory over No. 4 San Diego State in Wednesday’s showdown in Provo, Utah.

Fredette made 5-of-8 3-point attempts while topping 40 points for the third time in four games as Brigham Young (20-1, 6-0) won its 10th consecutive game and moved into first place in the Mountain West Conference.

San Diego State (20-1, 5-1) saw its school-record streak of 20 consecutive victories end, leaving top-ranked Ohio State as the only remaining unbeaten team in the country.

Kawhi Leonard had 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Aztecs despite being ill and receiving an IV approximately 90 minutes before tipoff. The sophomore now has 31 career double-doubles.

Fredette, a top National Player of the Year candidate, is averaging 35.7 points through six Mountain West contests.

San Diego State pulled within 56-52 on a 3-pointer by James Rahon with 7:23 to play before BYU went on an 11-2 run over the next six-plus minutes.

Brandon Davies added 14 points for BYU.

Malcolm Thomas added 10 points for the Aztecs. Guard D.J. Gay had just two points on 0-of-7 shooting after scoring 50 points in San Diego State’s past two games.

The Aztecs are now 3-29 in games played at BYU.
