Florida State survived a miserable shooting night Wednesday, rallying to defeat Miami (Fla.) 55-53 in Atlantic Coast Conference action in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Seminoles (14-5, 4-1 ACC) shot just 32.1 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from the free-throw line, but outscored the Hurricanes 16-9 in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Florida State had a chance to put the game away in the final two minutes, but missed its final five free throws. Miami (12-6, 1-3) had one last chance, but Malcolm Grant’s 3-pointer at the buzzer was partially blocked.
Down 31-24 at halftime, Florida State pulled within 38-35 on Michael Snaer’s layup with 15:22 remaining. Miami pushed the lead to 48-43 on Julian Gamble’s layup with 6:54 left, but the Seminoles scored the game’s next 11 points.
Derwin Kitchen’s layup with 5:35 left gave Florida State the lead, 49-48. A Kitchen 3-pointer and Bernard James’ tip-in with 3:26 to go made it 54-48 Seminoles.
Terrance Shannon led the Seminoles with 10 points.
