D.J. Gay scored a career-high 30 points, including 7 of 11 from beyond the arc, and No. 6 San Diego State extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 19 on Saturday with an 87-77 win over host New Mexico.
Kawhi Leonard added 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Aztecs (19-0, 4-0 Mountain West), who ended New Mexico’s 16-game home winning streak. Leonard’s double-double was the 29th of his career and fourth in his last five games.
Drew Gordon scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to pace New Mexico (13-5, 1-2), which trailed 37-29 after Gay made a 65-foot shot at the buzzer to end the first half.
The Lobos entered the game having won 35 of their last 36 at home, but San Diego State held them to 22 of 58 (37.9 percent) shooting. Dairese Gary scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half, but Phillip McDonald had just six points after scoring a career-high 27 on Thursday against Colorado State.
San Diego State shot 27 of 55 (49.1 percent) from the field, including 13 of 25 (52 percent) on its 3-pointers. Chase Tapley added 15 points for the Aztecs, who led by as many as 18 in the second half.
