Blake Hoffarber scored 26 points and No. 25 Minnesota held on for a 70-67 victory over No. 8 Purdue on Thursday night, snapping the Boilermakers' 10-game winning streak.
The Golden Gophers (13-4, 2-3 Big Ten) scored the final points of the game when Al Nolen's 3-pointer with 3:17 remaining broke a 67-67 deadlock. Purdue gave itself multiple opportunities to tie the score by holding its ground defensively, but the visiting Boilermakers (15-2, 4-1) missed their final five 3-point attempts, including a pair in the final five seconds.
Minnesota shot 54 percent from the field and committed just eight turnovers, picking apart a Purdue club that had ranked among the nation's best in scoring defense.
Nolen finished with 13 points and eight assists for the Golden Gophers. JaJuan Johnson led Purdue, which had been in search of its first 5-0 start in Big Ten play since 1989-90, with 29 points and 11 rebounds.
